This might not be specific to N54 as I've never seen the fuel pump setup on other newer BMWs. I searched and it seems like most people are able to get them off with a hammer and screwdriver or punch but it seems mine was on pretty tight and any force started deforming the tabs so I said screw it. For about 10 bucks I was able to make a tool that did the job easily without the worrying of screwing something up. Attached it a few pics I took to show but it's basically just a little flat stock from the local hardware store cut to length, make a few notches so it fits on the ring better and weld a cheap 3/8 extension to it.
